This might sound edgy, but it’s true.

I had the opportunity to meet John C. Maxwell last week. I don’t get overly impressed by many people, but he’s one of the few who’s deeply shaped how I think and write.

I handed him a copy of one of his books I’ve had for years. It was literally taped together, covered in notes and highlights. We laughed, he signed it, and it was an honor.

Later that morning, someone asked him what he would teach young people going into sales/business. He said:

  1. Value people and relationships above everything
  2. People grow in proportion to their hunger
  3. Good leaders care enough to have hard conversations

All three hit—but #2 stuck with me the most.

People grow in proportion to their hunger.

He followed it up with this:
“Life is uphill. The hungriest win.”

That’s the difference.

It’s easy to get comfortable. Easy to get “fat and happy” and think you’ve arrived after a little bit of success. But growth doesn’t live there.

In sales, and in life, you have to evolve. You have to become sharper, more aware, more valuable to your customers and marketplace.

And you have to stay hungry.

Nothing new here. But if you actually try to live it out, it changes everything.

3 Ways to Stay Hungry

  1. Set goals that stretch you
If your goals don’t push you, they won’t change you. Where are you complacent?
  2. Do hard things daily
As a friend of mine says, do something fitness wise every day that makes you uncomfortable. That mindset builds hunger. (Think Kobe.)
  3. Compete—and believe
Want to win and be excellent in your work. Not casually, deeply. Believe in what you do and bring that conviction every day.

**Don’t forget to Put God First and commit everything to Him.

And was we close up, remember:

If you’re not growing, don’t blame the opportunity, check your hunger.
